Flagstaff Arizona
A Gateway to the Grand Canyon

Flagstaff, also known as the City in the Pines, is the county seat of Coconino County, the second largest in the
United States. Located at the intersection of US Interstate 40 and US Interstate
17, Flagstaff is considered the hub for transport in the Northern Arizona area.
A beautiful and active city of about 59,000 people, Flagstaff is surrounded by
national forests of Aspen and Ponderosa pines and sits at the foot of Arizona's
highest mountain, 12,634-foot Humphrey's Peak. The Grand Canyon National Park,
located north of the city, has been a popular tourist destination since the
mid-19th century.
Other favorite sites are Walnut Canyon National Monument, Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument,
Wupatki National Monument, and Barringer Crater. Glen Canyon National Recreation
Area as well as Lake Powell are both easy nearby destinations.
For over 140 years, the famous Route 66 is one of Flagstaff's main
thoroughfares, with the railroad tracks running parallel with the legendary
highway for miles. The Flagstaff Route 66 Festival takes place in September with
plenty of classic cars, food, arts and crafts and entertainment.
The old "Two Spot" steam locomotive with its flat car sits beside the
railroad tracks and
the Railroad Museum. Built in 1911, the Arizona Lumber and Timber Company
purchased this Baldwin Steam Engine in 1917 for lumbering operations around
Flagstaff, where the engine spent its entire working life. The City of Flagstaff
purchased No. 25 in 1995 and is on display.
The city has one of the most impressive historic districts in the state. San
Francisco Street offers shopping, restaurants, and specialty shops that appeal to tourists
as well as locals.

The two historic hotels are a great place to start. The Hotel Monte Vista is
located on the corner of Aspen and San Francisco Streets since 1926. The
Weatherford Hotel opened its doors on Leroux Street in 1900.

Mountain views are seen in just about every direction. Flagstaff downtown
historic district is a great place to start your vacation. Spend some time there
before you see the outside attractions. You will be glad you did!

The downtown section is a very active place with plenty of shops, galleries,
restaurants, adventure outfitters, and a lively nightlife. Flagstaff is a
college town with thousands of the Northern Arizona University students who
enjoy the fun along with their academics.
Heritage Square is a popular place for events in the downtown historic
district. Some of the popular events are:
Heritage Square Trust Summer Concert Series, Movies on the Square, Live
entertainment before 'Movies on the Square', Flagstaff Live's Thursdays on the Square, and other events as scheduled.
